As many of you know, our Sunrise Kiwanis Club lost one of our most dedicated members on June 4^th , 2026 with the passing of Nancy L. Aspegren.  Nancy joined Russell Sunrise Kiwanis on January 12, 1995.  Nancy served as club President – elect in 2009-2010 and club President from 2010-2011.  She served as a Builders Club Advisor from 2007-2009.  Nancy was instrumental in the founding of our Aktion Club in 2005 and served as the Aktion Club Advisor from 2005-2026.  Aktion Club was her passion and she devoted so much of her life to this organization.   Nancy was the club historian and made sure there were photos of every event.  She saved newspaper articles and historical items over the many years of our club’s existence.  Nancy rarely missed a meeting or convention.  She was always ready to step forward to help with any club activities or projects.  She will be dearly missed by all of our members. 

The Russell Sunrise Kiwanis and Sunflower 4-H came together to host their annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser in support of the Russell Community Easter Egg Hunt.

Approximately 120 people were served during the evening — a wonderful show of community support!

To feed the crowd, volunteers served:

• 2 roasters of spaghetti sauce
• 24 pounds of pasta
• 20 pounds of lettuce
• 1 gallon of ranch dressing
• ½ gallon of Dorothy Lynch dressing
• 624 ounces of green beans
• 520 ounces of corn
• 160 slices of garlic bread
• 15 cakes

The cakes were generously made and donated by members of Sunrise Kiwanis and Sunflower 4-H.

The spaghetti sauce was made using Dee Ann’s recipe — one she has perfected over the years. Although she was unable to attend this year’s event, her famous sauce was still a big hit!

Volunteers included 9 Sunflower 4-H members, 5 Kiwanis members, and 5 community members who help organize the Easter Egg Hunt. Their teamwork made the evening run smoothly.

The dinner raised $1,481 in proceeds, which will go toward candy and prizes for the Russell Community Easter Egg Hunt on April 4 at 1:00 PM. In an effort to make the event inclusive for all children, we also ensure that peanut-allergy-friendly candy options are available.
