Sunrise Kiwanis Legion of Honor & Scholarship Awards

On June 20th, the Russell Sunrise Kiwanis gathered at the Alpha 7 Outdoors for a special evening of celebration and recognition. This memorable event marked our inaugural presentation of the Legion of Honor Awards, alongside our local recipients of Kansas Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship Award winners.
Legion of Honor Awards
The Legion of Honor Award is a prestigious accolade given to Kiwanians who have demonstrated remarkable dedication through 25 or more years of continuous membership in Kiwanis. This award is presented in five-year increments, acknowledging the steadfast commitment and service of our members.
This year, we proudly celebrated our very first class of honorees, recognizing their total years of service in Kiwanis. Moving forward, the Legion of Honor Award will be bestowed upon Kiwanians who have reached 25 years of membership, and every five years thereafter, in addition to those with 25 or more years of service.
Our heartfelt congratulations and deepest appreciation go to the following Kiwanians for their incredible dedication and service:
- Nancy Aspegren joined 1/12/1995 29 years
- Ward Craig joined 2/26/1994 30 years
- Judy Corley joined 9/6/1990 34 years
- DeeAnn Matheson joined 7/27/1989 35 years
- Duane Adams joined 02/08/1978 46 years
Scholarship Awards
In addition to the Legion of Honor Awards, we were thrilled to recognize our local recipients of Kansas Kiwanis Foundation scholarships. This year’s scholarship recipients have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community service.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all the scholarship winners and wish them continued success in their future endeavors:

- Edwin Muller, 2024 graduate, received $1,000
Evening Highlights

Kiwanis Aktion Club Annual Dinner Get-Together
On the beautiful evening of May 29, the Kiwanis Aktion Club, in collaboration with DSNWK, gathered for their annual delightful dinner filled with fellowship and camaraderie. This special event, hosted by the Sunrise Kiwanis Club of Russell, brought together adults aged 18 and above with special needs, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. Whether residing in DSNWK houses in Russell or other housing in the surrounding community, our club is dedicated to fostering connection, growth, and fun.
Members enjoyed the chance to connect and share stories under the clear skies, making it a memorable experience for all. The dinner menu featured a delicious spread, including hearty servings of spaghetti paired with green beans, accompanied by warm garlic bread. To satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth, a variety of delectable desserts were also served, adding the perfect finishing touch to a wonderful meal.
The event was not just about the food but also about the joy of being together. Conversations flowed easily and friendships were strengthened, making the evening truly special. It was a perfect blend of good food, great company, and beautiful weather.
Here’s to many more gatherings like this, where we can come together, share a meal, and celebrate the spirit of the Kiwanis Aktion Club.
Recap: Russell’s Egg-cellent Easter Egg Hunt
On March 30, 2024, the Russell community came together for an egg-ceptional day at the annual Easter Egg Hunt! Under the warm sunshine, youngsters from ages 1 to 5th grade, alongside special needs children, enjoyed an afternoon of egg hunting and excitement. 🥚🎉
But the fun didn’t end with the hunt! Attendees also had the chance to win fantastic prizes, including bicycles and gift cards. 🚲💳 This hunt was all made possible by the support from Russell Sunrise Kiwanis and the unwavering dedication of the Sunflower 4-H Club, Sarah & Jim Maske, and Jennifer Funk.

Kiwanis Youth Benefit Shoot
Join us for an exhilarating day of shooting for a great cause at the Kiwanis Youth Benefit Shoot, happening at Lasada Lodge on April 27, 2024! It’s not just another event; it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while having a blast.
Get ready to check in at 9 am and take aim at those flying targets starting at 9:30 am. There are two classes available: Adult and Youth aged 17 and under to participate in.
